Hope you can help. Suddenly when I try to Save As PS crashes with no warning, it just shuts down. I have a PC, a gig of RAM, plenty of disk space. I’ve uninstalled twice and run a disk defrag. Scratch Disk is set to a different drive. I have recently been preparing images for printing to A4 size. My "Master Files" were 300mb with layers which were flattened>sharpened>resized>sharpened and then "saved as", renaming the file. I had done several of these then suddenly when I tried to save it would crash. I tried the above thinking it was memory issues, with no success. I don’t think it is memory. Any suggestions gratefully received.

PS, forgot to add that I could edit the images OK and have been able to print too but as soon as I try to save as it crashes.

We need COMPLETE system specs. FWIW, some HPs have a known hardware defect.

And make sure you are specifying whether PS is crashing, or the PC is shutting down – different events.

Bob, do you think it’s worth mentioning in the FAQs (hope it’s not already there!) or in your boilerplate, that clicking on "Help -> System Info" in Photoshop gives a convenient editable summary of all that could be needed.

At least this bit of help still works for me 🙂 .

Cheers – JJ

It also gives the serial number, so no, I don’t think it’s a great idea. What we really need is the brand names of the various components such as NVidia, Intel, AMD, etc.

Obviously that is one of the things that should be edited out. But I take your point.

Well, it doesn’t give the complete serial number…

It gives enough, besides, like I said, the system info that is listed is really not what we need to diagnose most problems.

I found files in the FAQ relating to freezing… I deleted what I could in the temp file, refragmented both disks, checked for programmes that work in the background and stoped a feature in Spybot that warns of registry changes. But why then would it be OK saving and then not?

(I have to go away on a business trip today, back tomorrow)

Thanks for your offers of help.

Like I said, most of that is useless. The only thing that stands out is the hyperthreading. Have you downloaded and installed the multiprocessor update?

serious windows error. was xp a clean install or was it over top of something like 98 or me? have you installed sp2? if installing xp2 doesn’t fix it, i’m afraid you’re looking at a reformat and clean install of xp. back up first!

Dave beat me to it. But I see that only SP1 is applied. I have a feeling that SP2 would just make it worse.

not necessarily. it’ll overwrite the file and reregister it correctly. couldn’t hurt as a try before reformatting.

Agreed. Like I said, it’s just a feeling.

But there’s nothing like a fresh install.
