While looking at an old set of articles at a website called creativepro.com, I saw some interesting options for selective sharpening, which requires masking of edges and applying sharpening to the masked areas. However, after creating what is essentially a layer mask in a separate file, I find that I simply don’t know how to take that separate image and insert that image as a layer mask on the original image. Stated another way: I created a duplicate layer in the original image, and created a layer mask for that layer. I created a layer mask by saving the original file as another file name and processed it to create what is essentially a layer mask. Now I want to take that separate file and use it as the layer mask in the original image file. How do I load that separate image into the layer mask? Help please!!

You will need to copy the Mask from your new file.

Open the file you want to add the mask to.
Add a layer mask to the layer you wish to mask.
In the channels pallet select the layer mask channel.
Paste the mask to that channel.
