I’m a newbie on stuff like this; why won’t this work? I have RBG, 8 bit, are there any "understoods" that I don’t know? Just want a gray/white gradient that looks like chrome…

I don’t think there is any such animal as a gray/white gradient that looks like chrome… Since you are a self-admitted "newbie," go read your Help files on Gradients, so you know what the heck you are using, and how it is supposed to work. Just click F1 while in Photoshop.

There IS a "Chrome" gradient, but it is more the "airbrush" type of "chrome" effect.

A gradient by itself isn’t going to look like chrome. Like lynoz said there are metallic gradients but if you want it to truly look metallic you will need to do a little more work.

There are thousands of tutorials for simulating chrome. Above are the first 3 that were listed. I didn’t look at them very closely, although they looked similar in technique at first glance and the results weren’t too bad.
