Help,

want to upgrade but I am being told I can’t because CS3 is not "backward compatible"

Need to know if this is true or just BS, working with tight wads here

All I can say is that – as I am in the process of going from CS2 to CS3, and I have still both on my system – there is no problem in converting e.g. RAW in CS3 to JPG and then opening this image in CS3.
But I admit that this is a poor test…

Addendum: also a PDF from CS3 loads into CS2.

They are. It would be a major screwup if Adobe didn’t make the programs backwards compatible.

You have to be aware that new features that don’t appear in earlier versions won’t carry over. This has always been the case with every version.

There are some new features, smart filters for example, that are not supported in earlier versions. If you can manage to stay away from using those you should be OK.

I believe the trick is to set the Preference in Photoshop (Edit > Preferences > File Handling > Maximise PSD and … compatibility) to "Always".

I believe what this does is ensure that if there is something in the file that isn’t supported by CS2 (such as new adjustments layers, new blending modes, Smart Filters, etc) there will be a rendered image that can be used instead. Be warned that some of these new features are very useful, so it is easy to end up with problems like this.

This is something only Microsoft would do. I have had no problems swiotching from CS to CS3.
