What resolution are you using to scan and how large an image are you scanning? How much freespace do you have on your working hard drive? Are you running out of memory/virtual memory?

Have you done maintenance on your system lately? In particular, I’m wondering if you’ve run Repair Permissions since installing Elements and the drivers and software for your scanner or any other applications you’ve installed – especially those that make use of an installer.

Thanks to Beth for her help. I think I have finally solved the problem by down-loading an up-date for Photoshop that seems applicable to PS elements.
