I just bought the Canon XTi DSLR over the weekend and went, as one would expect, out and shot oh maybe 4 gigs of pictures in places I have shot repeatedly over the years.
I had not stopped to look at the "Digital Photo Professional" software that Canon provided with the camera but I knew I would have to pre-process any images I shot in RAW CR2 format due to the fact that I have CS version of Photoshop. I was disappointed to find that the Canon software was so limited in its capabilities especially with respect to RAW adjusting of exposure. I had always done this in CS with its support of Canon’s original RAW images.
In any event, now I find myself faced with restricted ability to adjust my exposures and color before transferring my images to CS. I don’t want to shell out the $$$ to upgrade to CS2 when CS3 is right around the corner. I know I can accomplish the same exposure adjustments in CS on a .psd, .jpg or .tif image but am not as versed in the use of those controls anymore and as I remember accomplishing the same things using the curves and other controls is much more entailed than is the RAW processing in CS.
So, I am faced with a small problem that presents the following questions.
1. Not having used .tif much and only using .jpg to save images that are provided the customer I am a little fearful that if I save from the Canon software to either of these formats I will loose image quality. Can anybody expand on this please? In CS I always worked in and saved in .psd until I was finished.
2. If I export from Canon directly to CS the image comes into CS how? As a .tif? a .jpg?
3. Am I so misinformed about image quality and format that I am making life hard on myself? <Silly Grin>
4. Is CR2 RAW better than CRW RAW or is this just a new format that Canon can milk some more licensing fees from Adobe over?
