I use Photoshop CS. I keep all layers when I save the PSD files. I don’t lock layers or flatten the image. When I give newly created PSD files (created by me) to my buddy (he uses Photoshop 7), he opens the file with his PS 7 and for some reason ALL of the layers are flattened and locked.

If he gives me a file that he has created and I alter it and send it back to him, everything is fine. Layers are intact. It seems this only happens when I create the file in PS CS and give it to him, then he doesn’t have the layers.

Can anyone explain this mystery? Is there something in my preferences or something that can stop this pain in the neck problem?

Thank you.

Maybe you did use blending modes, or adjustment layers (Photo filters) or special tools (text on a path) that does not exist in PS7, thus PS7 opens the flattened copy instead.

You’re editing a 16 bit image in CS, and PS 7 can’t use 16 bit layers.
