You don’t write much about it.
Either you got it for an article, or as a prize for winning a competition.

You probably don’t have a very large monitor, so you can’t set the resolution high enough to read further down that scrollbar-less column. As it is, I can’t get significantly further than: "…I have WON – i get my copy of Photoshop CS directly from Adobe in a couple of weeks", so I don’t really have any more info about it.

To tell you the truth, and it might sound like I am just jealous, I can’t believe he won with such average beginner work.
Oh well, terrible pet or sunset pictures always make it first in photo competitions, same thing I guess.

OK. Just went and looked at the site. First off Rich, get yourself some professional hosting. Tiscali just doesn’t crack it. Very amateurish. Secondly, I don’t appreciate having to kill unknown Java applets, even though my Firewall does catch them. Again, very amateurish. And the final thing that marks this as an amateur site – the use of the status bar at the bottom as attempted advertising. I say attempted because most people I know will instantly go elsewhere if they see that on a site. it tends to be used by porn sites to cover their jumping you to an unknown and possibly malicious URL (usually run which runs a dialer program).

As for the site design, it’s OK, average, the sort of thing one sees for a family web site. You know, "visit the Family Robinson and see their holiday pictures" type of thing. You really need to address the design if you wish to make it look professional. But don’t do that until you’ve got decent hosting – it’s be a waste of time. One more thing, if you are planning to try and get work with your portfolio, ditch the guest book. It’s fine on a family site, not on a portfolio site.

Now, the photography. I’m not going to criticise them individually, that would take far too long. (And if you think I mean tear them apart please check your dictionary for alternate meanings of criticise). Some are good, most are Ok and a few really shouldn’t be there. (The sunrise for example far too much black at the bottom which ways the picture down – it would work far better as a letter box shape with the bottom third of the frame cropped off).

You really need to take a web design course and you could probably do with reading a few issues of Practical Photography and it’s sister magazine Digital Photo. To give you a clue, I’ve been taking photographs for over 20 years and using PS for over 5 and I still find things in the magazines that are helpful, particularly the criticism pages.

Incidentally,. I saw a picture in DP which looked almost exactly like the Angel of the North picture of yours, down to the manipulation and the use of a different sky. Was that yours?

Anyway, best of luck and remember, practice makes perfect.

And that’s not all. Readers (in the UK) of the magazine Digital Photo will find his picture of the Angel of the North bears a striking resemblance to a picture in December 03 (issue 49) of that magazine. The magazine is excellent and provides tutorials on CD by professionals. For those tutorials, again on the CD, they kindly provide all the elements to make up the ,montage, or whatever, to illustrate the technique, along with a video tutorial you can watch at the same time. Rich’s picture of the ANgel of the North looks remarkably like the one in the tutorial only reversed laterally. I wonder how that happened?

Its this sort of thing that made me take down my website, quite q while ago now.
Four times in 18 months ideas from my site appeared in 2 different digital photography (type/genre not title!) magazines (3 times in one and once in another).
Once could be a coincidence, i.e. someone had a similar idea to mine, Twice MIGHT have been coincidence, but 4 times in a year and a half? I don’t think so.
Put something on my site and lo & behold, 2-3 months later a tutorial appears for an INCREDIBLY SIMILAR idea.

(Just for clarity I am NOT implying that Rich was involved in any way.) —

There are enough people stupid enough to think "modeling" starts with showing photos (tits) anywhere and getting "discovered" So even losers like Rich can get to shoot some not too pretty girls because he might have bought a camera big enough to look "pro" or even a strobe! Then in Richie’s case you add a very 90’s looking site, a few stolen photos, a good dose of bad taste and a total lack of photographic talent. To make it complete you place an other loser like yourself in front of it admiring Adele (the girl with no shadow).
Adele gets to dream of modeling, you get to jerk off on your keyboard and Rich even wins a copy of Photoshop and makes new friends on the www. Isn’t it wonderful?

Even if you could actually get Photoshop CS for free, it would not be worth it. Why?

Because of its Product Activation.

Wny anyone would use a program which is forever dependent on its manufacturer’s "permission" to be installed and used, is of course entirely up to them. But why accept software to which such strings are attached?

Even if you could actually get Photoshop CS for free, it would not be worth it. Why?

Because of its Product Activation.

Wny anyone would use a program which is forever dependent on its manufacturer’s "permission" to be installed and used, is of course entirely up to them. But why accept software to which such strings are attached?

Don’t get to excited. It will come next for the Mac and the

went before they did it to everyone and every program.

When product activation is universal, only the pirates will be able to avoid it.

My copy of WinXP doesn’t require activation.

Neither does my copy of Photoshop CS.

And thanks to KenP, my copy of Photoshop CS now opens images of the new banknotes.

So far, I’ve bought legitimate copies of my software, and use the pirated copies only to avoid product activation and the loss of privacy inherent in Big Brother’s frenetic attempts to track everything I do.

But I can foresee the day in which I’ll stop buying the stuff, too.

I think there are lot of people that buy the software and the crack it to get rid of activation. Windows XP, Office, Photoshop and Macromedia Studio MX and think are probably among the big ones that this happens to.

The thing that bothers me is I can see a time when this type of stuff coupled with piracy (actual theft of software, not buying and cracking) cause the software companies to get laws passed that enable them to become much more…nasty in what they do. I can see a time when cracking a program isn’t possible because it checks online servers almost every time you do something. Or, it gets small parts from the servers and does a check at the same time. Get rid of the check and you get rid of the small program bit and presto the software stops working.

I suspect this is why broadband is being pushed so much. Once we have high speed connections and are online all the time it will be easier for software companies to get nastier with this stuff. They could also get laws passed that would enable them to wipe a pirates or crackers computer of the software, etc. I can see this happening. The Digital Millennium Copyright Law is an example of what kind crap they can get passed. It is only going to get worse.

The thing that sucks is that we are getting to the point more and more where computers are just conveniences but a necessity. Soon we won’t be able to function without them and then the software companies will have us by the family jewels.

This won’t happy overnight, but slowly so that we won’t really notice or put up much of a fight. Hell the problem with using images of money in Photoshop CS is another example. What’s next?

I’m not so pessimistic. E.g. the DMCA has failed more legal challenges than it’s passed. And just two weeks ago the RIAA was told, finally, to go to hell by a federal court of appeals. Now the RIAA will have to go through the same proper and legal channels to get their subpoenas, which it clearly is not worth doing. At least within our justice system (if not our legislature) the tide is turning.

The thing that sucks is that we are getting to the point more and more where computers are just conveniences but a necessity. Soon we won’t be able to function without them and then the software companies will have us by the family jewels.

Computers? Maybe. Personal computers? Nope. Our First Amendment and fair use rights will wind up being saved by the likes of my roommate, those who absolutely refuse to have anything to do with computers, ATMs, etc. There are a whole lot of people out there (25-33% of the U.S. population,
depending on which survey one chooses to believe) who feel the exact same way about computers. These are the same
people who will save us from other pitfalls of technology, such as a cashless society, and the resulting supply-side fascism that would cause.

When they do (and Bill Gates has proposed precisely such a scheme), then the remaining legitimate software buyers will go to cracked versions.

Can you imagine software that won’t let you complete your project because your internet connection is down or you’re on an airplane?

Can you imagine PAYING for such software?

I can’t.

I noticed. That’s why I use a cracked version. And I feel absolutely no guilt in doing so.

Two days after I first heard that there was a limitation on importing images of banknotes, somebody posted a crack for it.

The REAL danger is that everyone (including the folks that now have moral compunctions about it)will feel that using cracked software is perfectly alright. And that those people will then take the next step, that it’s quite alright to use it without ever paying for it, or without paying for the latest version.

That’s already happened to the music industry.

Unenforceable laws breed disrespect for the law in general, and that’s usually a _bad thing_.

Unfortunately I don’t think we will have our first amendment for long. At least not the way we all want it. Hell Bush has even found a way to keep protesters out of his face and protesting is a first amendment right, but doesn’t do much good when you are 2 miles away from the person your protesting.

No things are going to hell. But, then I am a pessimist.

On the other hand if you have to pay $700 for software and then turn around and crack the crap out of it to get it work, then my question is why should you have to pay for it? Or, is it then worth $700? I would have to say no.

As for the recording industry. Well, they fought to long and hard to keep legitimate music downloads off the net. They basically forced people to take matters in to their own hands. Add to that the bloated cost of CDs and the fact that most CDs only contain 1 or two songs out of 15 or 20 that someone wants and well, they got what they gave. A perfect example is I want the song Into The West for the Lord of the Rings The Return of the King sound track. But, that is the only song I want. Why should I have to pay $15 bucks or more for that one song and get the rest of the stuff I don’t want?

For my .2c, the website is ugly, the pictures are average and your attitude is appropriate for someone with their first digital camera and more impressed with yourself and everyone else is.

LOL! This guy is using a java applet menu on his lame-o site. No one but pitiful amaturs uses that crap. The "untitled document" text in the top bar of the sub pages is a nice touch too.

Nothing wrong with Java these days. Of course it requires you to have 128MB of memory, and 300MHz CPU to get OK performance.

I prefer Java over Active-X any time. And when it comes down to runtime, .NOT and Java is about the same.

Sorry, it may not be fair or right, but that doesn’t mean it is ok to steal it. I will by the CD and then bitch and moan because I had to pay $15 for a single song. And, the recording industry wonders why people pirate music. How hard can it be for them to get a clue?

The slow change approach is very potent. I started painting my sisters room from white to black over a period of a year, I gave it a coat of paint shade darker one a month. After a while she thought we had a darker winter and later soot from the fireplace. Finally going into spring at 10 months she realized it was the paint that was wrong. (I almost got to a few shades to black). Now imagine a corporation who have all the time for slow change. And once they get it , they won’t give it up. I feel like a loser and poor white trash because I have dial-up. I get treated with rudeness online for being slow or just ignored in chats.

Huh? Didn’t she notice you in her room? Even if you waited until she left the room to take up your paint brush, it’s odd she didn’t notice the smell of fresh paint.
