This seems like it should be such a simple thing to do… yet for the life of me I can’t figure out how to get photoshop to do it!

All I want to do is arch a phrase into a half-moon shape – no distortions, nothing fancy, etc., just a straightforward arch. Any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks,
H

PS~ I am using Photoshop version 5.0.

Hi there, H!
To do it without distortions, probably the easiest way is to use a vector prog like Illustrator. If you have to do it in PS, though, you still can. You can type all the letters and rotate individually, but here’s how i’d do it:
1. Count the letters you want to have in the phrase. Count spaces too. Let’s say, for this example, you have 20. Now, figure out how much of a circle you want to have for your phrase. For this example, let’s say 1/2 the circle. Since 1/2 of a circle is 180

Why go to that much trouble? Why not just use the "Warp Text" tool in Photoshop and adjust the arc of the envelope to the desired result?

1. Count the letters you want to have in the phrase. Count spaces too. Let’s say, for this example, you have 20. Now, figure out how much of a circle you want to have for your phrase. For this example, let’s say 1/2 the circle. Since 1/2 of a circle is 180°, and you have 20 letters, that is 9° per letter.
2. Type your first letter. This will be at the top of the circle. You can rotate this whole thing later. Drag this to the Create a New Layer icon to duplicate it.
3. Ctrl-T to bring up the Transform handles. Drag the CENTER point of the Transform bounding box to where you want the CENTER of your circle to be. (This will be below your letter.)
4. In the Transform Options, type the degree value in under angle. For this example, it was 9. And .. tada! .. your 2nd letter rotated 9° around the center you specified.
5. Ctrl-Alt-Shift-T (or Edit Transform Again) counting till you have the right number of letters. Of course they will all be the same!
6. Click the 2nd letter in the Layers palette, and, using your type
tool, highlight the letter on the canvas and type in the right one.
7. When you have all the letters right, you can link all of the letters
and rotate it 90° till it is in the position you want.

Actually.. this is a much faster process than it seems. Certainly it is much slicker than manually rotating each letter, especially if you have many letters!

Where do you find that tool in PS 5?

Nowhere. It came in Photoshop 6.

It appears that I know that and you know that but seems that Scribe is missing this key bit of knowledge.

He said he didn’t want distortions, Scribe. My way is really lots quicker than it sounds.. and you don’t get any distortion. Always me, Janee
