We have Photoshop at work but I don’t use it. It’s not my field. I want to take a photo of my home and run it through a filter that will make it looked like it was painted by a famous artist and print it on our color laser printer
Like Van Gogh
Is this something that must be purchased separately from Photoshop or is it included.

Well first you start eating your lead-based paints, then you fall into a deep depression…

There are other plugins and programs that can do this better but Paint Engine is free:

yes. You want Painter. Then you import the photo, make a new file which is empty as paste as the type you require (oils, watercolour, etc).

Running an image "through a filter" may get you the look you want, or maybe it won’t. There are many factors that need to be considered such as color intensity, contrast, lighting scheme, er, in short – the BASICS of composition. You should know by now that computers will process the same as any machine: "garbage in, garbage out." If you don’t mind using your brain and a little creativity, I would suggest these photoshop filters and KPT plug-in filters as a start:

Photoshop Watercolor filter:

Photoshop Rough Pastel filter:

What about a word processor filter turning any badly written text into a Pulitzers prize?
Or what about a filter making W’s speeches coherent?
We need the " Looks like he can act" filter in Hollywood (the "looks like she/he can sing" filter does exist though)
I need a filter making my photos look like Bensimon’s.

I use Jasc’s Virtual Painter to turn photo’s into "paintings". I believe there is a demo for download on Jasc’s web page.

The Photoshop docs themselves will not be much help. Look around for tutorials on turning photos into paintings.

Also, play around with the filters that ship with Photoshop..Pointilize,
for
example, will get you right into Seurat-land. While not a friend of Vincent’s – who was, after all – he was at least an acquaintance.
Try this:

1) dup the image to a new layer, set darken mode, and use find edges to create a sort of cloisonne effect.
2) Switch to the bottom layer, and use Artistic>Palette Knife to create a painterly effect.

Not Van Gogh, quite, but play around and you may get something very close indeed.

Painter is an excellent program for this, but you may discover it costs
big
bucks, and is not really as cool as Photoshop.

One excellent site with a painterly bent is www.myjanee.com.
