Hit ESC with empty text box crashes Photoshop 7.01

Sometimes instead of a text cursor, my pen-down is read as a text box, and a very small empty text box is created. If I hit escape to clear the box, Photoshop 7.01 crashes after a minute or so.

I get a very similar error where pressing escape while typing text crashes Photoshop. I have Photoshop 7.01 and Windows XP. Here is how it is reproduced:

1) Create a new document
2) Select the "Horizontal Type Tool (T)"
3) Start typing text and then press escape (typing text is not even necessary)
4) Click somewhere outside of the text area on the document.

Result: "Could not complete your request because of a program error". Choosing another tool and clicking somewhere else on the document crashes Photoshop.
