I know that we are supposed to use the built in file browser in PS CS instead of Windows Explorer, but for those of us who want the option to use either, can someone please tell me how to restore them to Windows Explorer?

Thanks,

Aharon

It’s an "improvement" in the new version. You have to use the photoshop file browser.

Robert, I’m not with you here. I use CS and I can view all the same file types as thumbnails in an Explorer window as I did with previous PS versions and, AFAIK, this was from a default install. Are you perhaps speaking to a different issue?

Explorer apparently is not able to display the PSD thumbnail if you didn’t do a previous Photoshop installation on your harddisk.
I just replaced my harddisk and had to re-install CS. On the previous disk I could see Explorer previews of my 16bpc images, now I get junk, and now Explorer chokes on some large TIFFs as well.

Huh. Guess I’m lucky CS was an up-grade for me, not a clean install. Irrespective, you’d think there’d be a work-around for this if it still works for those of us who just up-graded.

No, same issue. Thumbnail views in Windows Explorer of Photoshop files are produced by a program called psicon.dll. psicon.dll is very, very buggy. Adobe says the bugs are Microsoft’s fault. Microsoft says the bugs are Adobe’s fault. Adobe wimped out and decided not to distribute psicon.dll any more.

So:
* Photoshop 7 includes psicon.dll.
* Photoshop CS does not include psicon.dll.
* If you install Photoshop CS without ever having had a
previous version of Photoshop, you will get no thumbnail views in Windows Explorer.
* If you install Photoshop 7 and then install Photoshop CS, psicon.dll will probably still work as usual.
* If you install Photoshop 7, uninstall Photoshop 7, and then install Photoshop CS, things get complicated.

It is possible to install psicon.dll yourself, but it requires some complicated registry editing. Instructions can be found in previous posts in comp.graphics.apps.photoshop and in Adobe’s forums.

There was a thread last week that is still on Google Groups, begun by "CyberCat" on January 1 and lasting through the 3rd. It was entitled "No thumbnails for PSD-files in Windows Explorer." There was discussion of a workaround that involved copying an old Version 7 file and some registry entries.

I don’t know if you can follow this link (you may have to cut and paste if it word wraps in your newsreader), but that should be enough information to find the thread. I believe it may contain the workaround to which you’re referring.

has ne thought of turning on Image Previews????

just an idea, open Photoshop CS/ Edit/Preferences/File Handling and under Image Previews set it to ‘Always’
then from now on, whenever you save your image, the thumbnail preview is available in explorer.

This has worked for me..
and if theres no preview, then it wasn’t saved with the above feture turned on, which means you’ll have to open them again and then save again to regain them all…

hope that helps

That is necessary[*] but not sufficient to get Windows Explorer to display thumbnails for Photoshop files. You also have to have psicon.dll installed.

[*] I’ve heard that turning on compatibility mode also works, but I’ve never tried that because it wastes so much disk space.
