Path Editing Question

I have a complex path consisting of many elements and now must edit this path. Since it is so complex, I don’t want to redo it from scratch.

In many places I must break the continuity of the path and then rejoin the loose ends to other sections of the path.

To reduce the problem to its simplest form for analysis, imagine two concentric circle paths. Break adjacent points on these circles to form two open nested "C" shapes, then add new straight lines between them to make the border of a single continuous "C" shape.
I guess the main part I don’t understand is how to break the continuous circle path – deleted points just make the circle smaller or more lopsided.

How does one do this in Photoshop?

Add points where you want the "C" to end, then using the Direct Selection tool (open arrow) select the point(s) you don’t want and hit Delete.

Here I’ve been avoiding the keyboard, and just using
right-mouse/"delete anchor point"….
