PS locks up when saving files?

I’m having trouble when I open any file, do some work on it and try to save it again, or save as another file type (psd to jpeg). PS will freeze and select the hand tool and not allow me to do anything else. I have to then use control, alt, delete to close it out and nothing is saved?
any help?
