Adjustment Layer problem

When I create an adjustment layer and then attempt to erase some of it – the eraser only has any effect on the area outside the adjustment layer, leaving the adjustment layer intact.

If you understand that, please let me know what is happening.

You need to paint in black on the adjusment layer’s _mask_

Remember you are erasing the mask next to the adjustment layer, also check for a hidden selection you may have a selection active.
