Help!
I have saved my knockout as an image mask. I want to put this mask onto a background. Following the instructions in the PDF manual I opened both the mask and my background file. I followed all the instructions on page 70 of the manual for applying the mask in Photoshop. It just doesn’t work! all I get is the cutout area of my mask surrounded by red. The background image shows through the transparent area of the mask. Can someone please help me with this? Paul

This is normal behavior for a mask that is added as an additional channel. There are a number of ways to use this channel in Photoshop.

One way to use the mask in PS is via the Select>Load Selection … menu command, and specify your alpha channel.

Make sure your image is positioned as a layer on top of a background image, then use Layer>Add Layer Mask>Reveal Selection to use your original alpha channel as a layer mask. Your image will show only in the areas where your alpha mask was nonzero.

Well I tried what you said, unfortunately all it did was lose the background everywhere but inside the mask. I think the mask is just empty and i don’t know why! When I click apply and exit KO the KO’d image appears in a new transparent document. I load my background and move the image over to it as a new layer. Should I save the image mask after it has been knocked out but before I touch it up with brush and eraser?

Dragging the transparent image from the layers palette onto the background image should do it. Otherwise maybe someone else who had Knockout can help you.
