I’ve just upgraded my machine from W2k to XP and now PS7 won’t work.

When I click on the icon, I just get a message box saying "The parameter is incorrect"

Photoshop Album (v1) works fine, as does Acrobat Reader v6.

I found a troubleshooting doc on the website that suggest I should completely uninstall and re-install.

Has anyone have this and does it work?

Thanks in advance,

Geoff

Upgraded how? Anything other than a clean install is a big mistake.

You mean how did I upgrade to XP from windows 2000?

I just put the cd in the drive and selected ‘upgrade’ on the install screen…

How else do you keep all your applications and settings?

Would this be a cause of my problems?

Yes.

Bad move.

How else do you keep all your applications and settings?

In short, you don’t.

Would this be a cause of my problems?

Most definitely.

Now, to fix everything, here’s what you do. Back up all of your data and fonts. Make sure you have drivers for all of your hardware and pop the WinXP CD in your CD drive. Go to your BIOS and set the computer to boot to the CD drive and restart the computer.

From there, just let it go. At one point, you’ll get to a screen where you can delete the partitions on the harddrive. Do it. At this point you can partion the drive. I have separate partions for the O/S, programs and data. And a second harddrive for swap files.

I know it sounds like a pain, but it shouldn’t take more than 6-8 hours to complete which is a lot less than it will take to get you running with an upgraded operating system.

I guess I must have been lucky with the boxes I did an OS upgrade on!

Is there any other market leader application which needs such extreme measures?

Or one that loses its preferences and settings so easily?

If there is, I haven’t met one in 20 years of using computers.

I can understand what you’re saying, but all my other applications seem to be working fine. It seems a bit extreme to have to wipe out everything I have just to ensure I can get Photoshop working.

If I can’t find an alternative to your solution, I think I’ll just restore my w2k system and not bother with XP.

Thanks for your help…

that’s a shame. xp is a much better system with much more vendor support. do yourself a favor and put some effort into it. of course, if you can’t be bothered why should we? <shrug>

You certainly must have.

What are you referring to?

The ability to upgrade an operating system comes from Microsoft’s marketing department. I can assure you that asking any software engineer will result in the same response I gave you.

Good luck,
