I’ve tried to calibrate my montor using Adobe Gamma, and it works fine, except when I try to adjust brightness, the black box that is supposed to have a gray center is completely black and nothing I do brings out any gray. I am using a flat CRT screen by Viewsonic. Any suggestions? (Yes I’m getting my VISA card ready)

tough to do with a flat screen. At this point, a CRT screen is still best for photo work.
