Ifv your thumbnails were saved in an earlier version of PS they may not open so you will need to open them and resave. Try opening one and see if a profile mismatch notice comes up. Richard
Did anyone ever really have an answer to this bug? I tried re-saving the files in Photoshop 7.0.1 but I still have the same problem. I’m running WIN2K with all service packs and updates installed. The problem is as follows, when in Windows File explorer, I only see the JPG icon, eventhough I have "Thumbnails" selected. Thanks in advance for your help.

You could batch process all of the images in a folder using a saved action, say resize 10% constrained, fix up the file name by adding something like _TN and saving to the same source folder. You will still need to choose the optimize settings, I simply click OK at the 80% level. I have not found a way to automate that but it’s pretty quick. MAKE sure you add the _TN after (to the right of) document name in the batch process dialog or put them in a different folder. You could make a sub folder within the main images folder using right click and the Photoshop browser and name it email or something clever and then choose that folder as your destination folder. Hope that helps. "Moz" wrote in message

I do it by creating a ‘droplet’. This ends up as an icon on the desktop you just drag a bunch of pictures into and PS does the rest. By far the simplest way to do it but of course, you have to create the droplet!
These are much like Macros. Just start the ‘create droplet’ from the ‘Automate’ selection under the ‘file’ menu item and it will record the first image you alter. Save the droplet and it will repeat all you did. I’m not sure how many images you can drop into it at once but I do it with 20, 3 meg images, no problems.

I’m not clear on what you mean. If you mean ‘can you link to the folder of thumbnails WebPhotoGallery makes?’ Well, yes. You upload the thumbnails in the original folder or not and then make a link on your webpage to the path where you put them.
If you upload the whole thing that WebPhotoGallery makes (a mini site) , you can link to the index.htm file PS makes and run all the links within your site. Just make a separate folder on your site for all the files and folders WebPhotoGallery makes and link to the index file there.

I am new to this and not very good. I have an image that is too big for my purposes and I would like to make a thumbnail image of it and then a link to the full size image. But, I don’t know how to do it. I would appreciate some help.
I am "trying out" Elements 2.0 and am loving it. I will purchase it soon and am even considering switching from PS 5.5 until I can afford to upgrade to CS. My question is: When you use the file browser, (as I have done, just to check it out) does it generate and save the thumbnails (thus taking up disk space) and if so where? I am already using ACDsee and don’t see the need for duplicate sets of thumbnails.
Thanks for your help and thanks for the overall helpful and friendly tone of this group.

Pat, I see that you are using Usenet – as such the majority of people who are using the Adobe forum will not see your query.
I think the browser does cache the thumbnails.
I use both the browser and ACDsee. Each has its separate uses

I have a folder that always displays thumbnails. I prefer a list and use view to change it but the next time I open the folder the thumbnails are displayed. How can I change the preference to list. This does not happen with all my folders – just this one Thanks for the help
Both my work and home computers will not display the thumbnail view in Windows. They used to, but in both instances, I was working in photoshop and then suddenly I had no thumbnail view. I can browse the images in Photoshop Browse but not outside of Photoshop.
Somebody told me Photoshop blows out some code that must be replaced in the Windows registry but I have no idea what it is. I really miss having thumbnail view and would love to have it back. Can anybody help me?

I trying to make a thumbnail that can be attached to an e-mail where the recipient receives it as a thumbnail and clicks on it to enlarge it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Dave,
One solution it to post the large photo on the web, then make a thumbnail and imbedded as the hyperlink in your e-mail.. When the receiving party opens your html e-mail and clicks on the thumbnail/ hyper-link they will open the larger photo at the website where you have uploaded the photo.
Images acting as the hyperlink is the method all website use, the thumbnail is only a link to another WebPage that has the larger photo. Problem, a lot of users are turning off HTML and receiving text only e-mail to avoid the spyware contained in e-mails this might not work…
A hyperlink as an attachment to an e-mail, that is a new twist, something I do not know about.
The Adobe browser in File > Open doesn’t do thumbnails for PSD files, and it takes forever to cache thumbnails for other file types – there’s nothing pleasant about it.

Photoshop used to come with a little thing that would allow this. However, what has been said here by the powers that be it caused more problems than it was worth and was dropped with I think Photoshop CS.
If you want to view your images outside of Photoshop you will need a problem like ACDSee or some other image viewer that supports .PSD files.
it caused more problems than it was worth and was dropped with I think Photoshop CS.
rather, i think it was said by those powers that it sometimes exposed a data-losing bug in windows explorer that microsloth has thusfar refused to fix.
Some of my photoshop files show up as black thumbnails on Photoshop 6, Adobe Photoshop Elements and Windows XP picture viewer. They show up ok on Irfan View. Is there something obvious that I am doing wrong?
The photoshop thumbnails of my psd files that are in my folders do not show the preview of the picture any more. They used to, but all of a sudden I see the little feather and not the preview. For the life of me, I can’t find the setting to correct this. Thanks to all

Basically, it boils down to a disagreement between MS and Adobe over how to implement this feature. Interestingly, nothing has changed in CS3… the thumbs are still missing, at least under XP CS2; haven’t heard about Vista yet.
I don’t htink it’s a disagreement art, ps HAD the feature, coded according to MS specs for creating explorer extensions (which psicon.dll is), but had to pull it because of the rash of lost data reported here (and probably to cust svc, i’d imagine) that was caused by contension between ms’s thumbnail feature and adobe’s. chris and others have said it’s a bug in explorer and that ms has refused to fix it. i believe that’s a big reason adobe decided to build bridge.
Thank you guys for your response. It is a very annoying situation, sometimes I want to select photos without opening photoshop, and bridge is not friendly if I have pictures in the thousands. Thanks for the tip though. I will make an image and then I will try the patch, see what happens.
There’s a post on the SitePoint blog that provides the hack kit that says: "The line that Adobe have taken is that there was Βa problem in the operating systemΒ rendering thumbnails in Explorer, which resulted in files staying open, even after you had closed Photoshop or Illustrator."
Which kind of dovetails with another half-remembered thing in the back of my head, that the .dll didn’t behave well in file-locking mode if the file was being worked on in a couple of aps.
I’m sure Chris will clarify if we’re off-base.
The SitePoint blog is still logging favorable comments from people using the hack… I did a quick skim of the comments and didn’t pick up any messages saying it blew up things…
no art, i agree many people are using the hack successfully (which i was involved in working out, as was howard (ho) and others, picking out registry keys that needed to be set etc. – i wonder if the archive here goes back that far to find the original posts…) but like bob said, it’s not supported and if you’re one of the people who has problems with the file locking, you’re going to be SOL.
bridge is not friendly if I have pictures in the thousands
If you talk to it nicely, Bridge will become your new best friend.
* First ensure you have no more than 55% memory allocated to PS in your preferences. That amount is about right XP systems with 2GB of physical RAM (If you’ve less than 2GB, go buy more!)
* Because Bridge is a separate application, the more system resources you make available for it, the better. For operations involving huge numbers of files, have just Bridge running alone. If the OS starts paging out to virtual memory due to too many programs running at once, things will really slow down.
* Make sure you have "Maximize Compatibility" switched ON in Photoshop’s preferences. Bridge render the thumbnails and previews faster for PSDs saved this way.
* Point Bridge at the root of your image files directories. Click "Cache sub directories" then go to bed. It will build the thumbnail and preview cache whilst you sleep.
I use the patch and I’ve never lost any work, although, after CS was launched (necessitating the patch), I had a brief spate of "Cannot save because file is already open" messages. This did not prevent me from saving the document under a new file name, however. The error went away as mysteriously as it appeared and I haven’t seen it since.
Chris, I will do as you say to better the performance of Bridge.
I usually use Bridge in the daily workflow, while I have photos in separate folders. Eventually I transfer completed work in new folders, where they accumulate…. Sometimes though, me or someone else (clueless of photoshop) need to select specific pictures. When I had thumbnail view in my folders, the selection was done easily, without launching anything.
There are cheap or free quick-launching 3rd party viewers if you are frightened by the ominous danger of lost work. I sympathise with everyone over the shortcomings of Bridge.
While I rarely use Bridge, I suspect it would be good to use it more so I’d learn what added value it might bring me, but just as John said, there are good 3rd-party viewers that work well. In particular is IrfanView, which many have touted in here as providing very fast thumbnailing. Even it I don’t use often, as I commonly work directly from a thumbnail view in Windows Explorer. But, as that doesn’t work well for PSD files, IrfanView makes a great alternative. It is also simply a useful tool to have in case you havd difficulty viewing any particular type of image file, as it can handle many. One peculiarity about it that I found, was that when I select "Browse with IrfanView" from the right-key menu extensions, IrfanView launches to fully span both my monitors. The solution was to resize it as desired and select "Save Size/Position" from the Options menu….should you try it out and see the same thing.
I am sure that IrfanView has its merits, but if I am to launch something to view files, then it is more logical to stick to Bridge So, for the time being I will use Bridge, but as soon as the opportunity arises (have some free time) I will certainly be tempted to try the patch and see what happens.
n particular is IrfanView, which many have touted in here as providing very fast thumbnailing.
daryl, do you know of a way to make irfanview save the thumbnails it creates? i’d not mind using it as it’s a useful little app, but having it rescan and recache thumbnails every time i enter a folder or start the program makes it unusable. i must be missing something, but i’ve kept on forgetting to ask this question…
No, I’m not sure how to save the thumbnails in Irfanview. I don’t use it often myself, as I’ve long used ThumbsPlus, which does maintain a database for its thumbnails. I see no such option Irfanview unless it is hidden behind an option to Save Size and Position that I see when browsing a folder. However, even after I select that option, then close and reopen Irfanview, there is stil a very brief delay while it rebuilds or refreshes the thumbnails. I’m sure the length of time to rebuild is relative to the number of images in a folder and the ones I browsed tonight were rather small. Irfanview defnitely isn’t the end all-beat all viewr, but for free it is useful to have in one’s toolbox, given the wealth of image types it can read.
I had determined that size did not make any difference. This morning I decided to do a few more test files flattened vs layers just to confirm previous findings…ie no difference..neither flattened or layered tiff was previewing in Windows Explorer.
HOWEVER, this time when I saved both a flattened and layered (both 8 bit), I left the "Save Image Pyramid" unchecked. Voila! Both test files preview in Explorer!
Read what little I could find on the subject of image pyramid…something related to resolution display.
My Partner has never lost anything either using the patch/hack…
I’ve just posted questions in the CS3 (PS/Bridge) groups about Thumbnail preview in Windwos Vista as I’ve tested it and it doesn’t work (using an old version of the products or the Hack) as the Explorer Thumbnail is generated differently now (In early Vista builds it caused it to crash repeatedly until they fixed it after I bugged it!).
Adobe will have to write a preview plug-in for Photoshop and Illustrator to get Explorer to generate a thumbnail. I had heard from microsoft early last year that Adobe had enquired how to write these things so I was hopeful when I tried PS CS3 beta.
Is there a 3rd party tool which handles AI files (Illustrator)?
Vista Explorer preview is soooo good for other apps, and Microsoft have their own products coming with ‘some’ of the Adobe features so lets apply some pressure!
I have a problem with displaying thunbnails of .NEF and .RAF – Files. I have CS2 running on XP Prof.
For the RAF – Files the thunbnails are displayed correctly in the CS2- Filebrowser. In the Windows – Explorer only icons are displayed. For NEF – files there are no thumbnails at all, only icons. Both file-types are registered and displayed in Windows-Explorer Extras/Folder-Options.
Is there any possibility to control the display of thumbnails in XP? I have found a lot of discussions and solution suggestions, but only for Windows2000.

Hi Group, I’m curious to know if there is a way in Vista to display thumbnails for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign files so that I can see the actual content rather than just the generic icon. It works for me with Acrobat files but not the others. Ideas would be appreciated. Bob

since PS CS this feature has been removed for Windows users (forcing you to use the hideous file browser from PS)
I do not have Vista In XP I have used on 2 computers a successful hack google for psicon.dll
there is a download of two files you add to registry
since then I have thumbnails of all PS and Illy files in Windows Explorer and do not need to wait half hour to see my files in PS browser
another peeve is that Win users cannot get the changing color cursors in PS how hard would it be for Adobe to add those functions for Win users? not everyone is all rah rah for Mac but we still want a fully functioning program Adobe snubs Window users
a grey cursor and tool on a grey seamless sux for photo retouching

I don’t use Photoshop with Vista, but I have no problem with Photoshop or just about any aps to display thumbnail by selecting the Windows standard viewing option "Thumbnails", "Tiles", "Icon", "List", "Detail" etc.. Or you should see a "Views" button.

I believe Adobe has said that is an OS issue. I am sure they would love to have that functionality in the Windows version.

in windows comp with no old installs the thumbnail creation files are no longer installed with CS and newer versions this is documented
so Joel you either have or had old installs on your own system or use a Mac
of course we know how to turn on the views DUH and the OP says he sees them for other files!!!!
