I have loaded the software several but still most of my filters are grayed out in the menu. What is wrong and how do I to them? There are many other commands that are grayed out also. If you have not guessed yet this is my first time using any photoshop software and I am very frustrated over the poor documentation and how to make simple things work. Also there is the note about the goodies file but I do not see it in the photoshop CS directory. Where do I find it and what do I do with it? Thanks in advance for all of the help.

The filters depend on the image mode. I bet you have a gif loaded, which is indexed mode, only allowing a few filters. Go image/image mode and change to RGB and all should be well.

And the Goodies folder is on the CD.

Apparently you didn’t choose to install it when you loaded Photoshop. Insert the Photoshop CD, find the Goodies folder and copy it to your Photoshop folder on your hard drive.

Dig around on the CD—you may find some other stuff on there that you might like to have on your hard drive.

It’s smart to have easy access to the Help files and the Shortcuts PDF.

It’s even smarter to spend time reading them!
