Reduced ability to specify print size on my HP 960C printer

For quite a while I was running Photoshop 7 on a Win 98 SE computer. The driver for my HP Deskjet 960c printer gave me the option of printing to a number of pre-set sizes of paper. In addition, I could specify "custom size" or some name like that, and then I could specify the exact height and width of the paper to be printed.

Now I am running Photoshop 7 on a WinXP HomeEd computer. When I try to set the paper size, I can only chose between the pre-set sizes but there is no longer any way to specify a size not on the list. As far as I know, I am using the correct HP driver for WinXP.

Before I spend $30 on what could prove a fruitless phone call to HP, IĀ’m wondering whether anybody in this forum has an answer to this problem.

Try posting your question to comp.periphs.printers.

On my Canon IP4000 I have limited paper size options if I choose borderless printing.

I posted my question to comp.periphs.printers.

After doing so, I saw that the last posting on any subject in that newsgroup was one on April 23. Before that there was one posting on March 17, two on March 1 (one of whoich was a commercial spam message), and before that February 11.

Bottom line — that newsgroup is just about a dead letter, and posting my question there was a waste of time.

I hope that if anybody has an answer to the question that I posted, they will respond to it rather than assuming that I would have gotten an answer on that other newsgroup.

I frequent comp.periphs.printers, and haven’t seen any post from you. It is very active group (certainly more so than this one!) – It sounds like there is something wrong with your newservers coverage of the group. Try accessing it and posting through Googlegroups instead.

Oops! I posted my message to comp.periphs.printer, and never noticed that there was a different news group called comp.periphs.printers.

I am curious why anybody would have created a second newsgroup with such similar name to one that existed.

I also posted my message to comp.graphics.apps.photoshop, and see that somebody answered it on Sunday. Her answer was:

You say: "As far as I know, I am using the correct HP driver for WinXP."

Yes but did you check. Most home computers use the
come-with XP drivers. The printer will function but not have any specific features. I use Epson. The on-board
drivers for XP do not show any of the advanced features for my model like the ink levels, or special types of
papers for my printer. I have to download and install the driver for my model.

If you have the correct printer installed you should see more options in Photoshop next time.

Is "Print with Preview" in that version of PS? I can make custom sizes of paper in that interface under page setup or in my printer driver interface.

HP has a very super simple free website wizard to install drivers for you, I used it on my friend’s comp. I would do that first.

I am evaluating her answer. My Win98SE computer has the driver that came with the printer. If the WinXP computer is using a Microsoft driver that lacks some of the features of the original driver, I don’t know whether I can use that old driver with WinXP.

Anyway, any further suggestions would be welcome.

Caitlin –

Thank you so much. I downloladed the driver from the URL you suggested and I now have the ability to specify a customized paper size.

You have made my day, week, year, etc.
