Does PNG format supports transparency

when is do a save for web in photoshop 7 and choose png-24 format the preview is tranparent (if transp. box is checked)

but when i save the file there is a matte applied (background) to it automatically

if photoshop / png-24 can not save transparent images why it is showning tranp. option in the save for web form

please can the forum help

When you view in what? MSIE has no native support for 24-bit transparent PNG files.

PNG certainly supports transparency.

How are you seeing the matte? [Bearing in mind that many Web browsers do not support PNG propoerly, if at all.]

Have you created a transparent area on your image? [I have to ask – never ignore the obvious.]

The only modern mainstream browser that does not properly support PNGs is IE.

It demonstrates how 8-bit and 24-bit (8bpc) transparent PNGs are rendered by different browsers. It also makes use of the information provided by Len in the above link (post #2).

Not wishing to sound like a M$ groupie, but 90-lots% of users have IE. By definition, nothing else is "mainstream".

Fair comment. What I meant was that my comment did not account for lesser known or obsolete browsers – it had nothing to do with market share.

It should like fine in ANY browser, if implemented correctly. See the link I posted in #4 above.

That doesn’t solve the problem for a visitor to your site; provided of course, that the intent is for web. If a visitor doesn’t have the plug in and is using IE, then they won’t see it with transparency.

Plugin? No plugin Tony. AlphaImageLoader is a proprietary IE filter, and if you use a browser detect script, you can easily get the page load/display properly with the majority of browsers – without an extras, like plugins.
