No idea, but you can do this with the freeware Irfanview.

I use Irfanview but I was just curious whether Windows Picture and Fax Viewer has lossless rotation. I suspect not.

I noticed that Irfanview doesn’t rotate the Windows Explorer thumbnails but the images are rotated when opened in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer or Photoshop. Is that your experience?

Not only no, but simply viewing thumbnails can wipe EXIF information.

If you actually care about your images, use software from people who care about their clients instead of simply making money.

Thanks for confirming my "no" Eric. What EXIF information is wiped by viewing the thumbnails? I haven’t noticed any change in the EXIF.

Well, let’s see you create some alternative software then, if you care so much about people. Amazing how jealous people are of the successful.

It has been a know factor since XP was released that using the rotation in the Picture/Fax viewer is not lossless. Windows opens, rotates and RESAVES
the file. (And yes, I have tried it and the file sizes do change.)

Could you elaborate Eric? It doesn’t happen on my computers.

Brian K,

I am as unconventional, as far from being a bootlicker as they come. I just have no problems with Windows XP at all and find it really good. So why not defend a damn good programme? Like I said, if you think it is so crap, build something better!

Have a good day,

I addressed my last response to Brian K, sorry Brian. It was intended for Eric Gill. Eric, the only reason I even commented was this: I am so bored of hearing people carry on about Microsoft or Windows all the time. You have a right to your opinion. You have obviously either had bad experiences, don’t know how to maintain an operating system, or are jealous of others’ successes. I don’t know which one applies. I personally have had a fantastic run with XP, some previous Windows were fairly crap without adoubt. So, why is it that you can give your opinion of how bad it is, but someone who has had a totally reliable eun with XP can’t voice their opinion too? Bad things are ok to say, but good things makes one a bootlicker??? Gee, you better not tell me PS CS is a good programme then, coz that would make you a bootlicker, right?

Brian.

I’m with you. I love WinXP.

I’d still like Eric to explain why "simply viewing thumbnails can wipe EXIF information".

XP is a damned good image processing program?

I think not.

Like I said, if you think it is so

Yes, you said that. And now, you’re equivocating an OS and the supplemental or seperate software made for image processing.

I don’t use the WIndows viewer, so can’t comment.
As for the thumbnails, I doubt Irfanview would go looking for a second file to rotate as well (if it even knows about the thumbnails). It probably just works on the jpeg file actually in memory; maybe if you save it with a different file name the new file will have a rotated thumbnail?

Sounds logical. I just find the Windows Viewer more convenient to use than the other viewers. Pity its rotation is not lossless.
