I have many slides which have lost colour during the years. Any good ideas what to do?

Something like this <http://www.scantips.com/color.html> might put you in the right track. But, as Matt says, with curves it’d be better.

You might like to try this:
Scan the slide
Copy the layer
Set the mode of the top layer to Multiply
Reduce the opacity of the top layer to [say] 50%

Yes, learn about curves. Generally with old slides you’ll need to drag the red channel dark endpoint of the line to the right.

Image > Apply Image also works well with washed-out slides.

A good reference on color correction is:
Professional Photoshop by Dan Margulis. Not sure what the latest version number is but "6" onward would cover your needs.
