tried a few ways, with less than satisfactory results…any idea how to get a nice washed out faded (in certain areas and/or all over if wanted) effect for text and/or images, or images with text?

Photoshop is 90% about making accurate selections.

One way: add a layer of white with or without a mask, depending on whether you want it only on a specific area or the whole thing, and either vary the opacity or change the blend mode.

Two seperate layers, using the eraser tool, you can either rub away what you dont want, or rub through to show whats below, use a large brush, set its opacity to 50% and start rubbing.

Another way: Substitute a mid range neutral grey for the white in Yrbk’s post.
