I have an old B&W photo in which the right side not fully exposed and gradually gets lighter. I’m thinking that if I could gradually darken that area (gradient?), it could be fixed. I’m a novice when it comes to layers, paths, etc. so any assistance would be appreciated.

Your gradient idea is probably the best way. You can make a selection by using the gradient tool in Quick Mask mode, then switching back to the normal painting mode and using the adjustment tools to play with the area.

A layer above set to darken blend mode, with color in the areas to adjust is another way.

Whatever you do, don’t play with the original. Always use a copy. —
