Err… I know this is going to sound dumb, but the only way for me to know is to ask. First off, I’ve done web design work, so I’m not really a newbie. But I haven’t done much desktop publishing, and none with Acrobat.

I never paid much attention to Acrobat, until recently when someone told me you could actually do web design work from scratch with Acrobat. I always associated the program with just converting and viewing documents with Reader, as opposed to actually *creating* stuff with it.

My understanding is that (and please correct me if I’m wrong) Acrobat doesn’t have the text/design tools a program like, say, Photoshop has. So what EXACTLY *can* you create with Acrobat if you are a web designer? Because if you’re able to create colorful pages for the web with Acrobat, then I’d be willing to give it try.

Thanks,

Dan

Hello, Dan: Acrobat (specifically 6.0 pro) does not create web pages from scratch. You can convert some things to web pages, but the outcome is not what you could create using a real web authoring tool such as Dreamweaver, GoLive and so-forth.

See for yourself. You can download a free trial copy from: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/main.html

I don’t see any reason to try and create web pages from Acrobat Sounds like using a screwdriver to hammer nails; it can get it done, but there are much better tools for the job.

Acrobat creates platform-independent PDF files. They are convenient because if done correctly, the layout will look like you want it to on any system. There are no font issues and you can even set permissions for printing, altering, etc. You can create forms with hyper-links or open fields that can be filled in by the end-user. You can attach sound and sticky type notes. A lot of tutorials on the net are in PDF format. The possibilities are endless.

I’ve created a small coloring book and offer it for download on my site here:

I send out PDF invoices to my clients. They get a professional looking form from me and I know 99.9% of them will be able to use it. I have an aviation form on my site that has open fields that can be customized by pilots to save them time filling out flight plans. —

The only way you can (sensibly) do it is by taking an Acrobat file and exporting to GoLive which will create a web page from the Acrobat file.
