Making a pattern stamp, how to?

I am trying to make a pattern stamp in V6.0

I have done my pattern and then
outlined in square marquee tool then
edit and define pattern tool
then named it
It appears in the patterns which I click on but doesnt seem to give me the pattern in my picture, just a blank as in nothing.

help please as I must be doing something wrong.

It could be something simple like having the blend mode of the layer you have selected set to something like hue that will not display the pattern or possibly you are trying to apply the pattern with a selection made. For purposes of diagnostics you might consider adding a new ‘fill layer’ (pattern) using the new pattern this will eliminate a lot of variables and allow you to see if the pattern is actually visible.

Thanks I went through the motions of creating new ones a couple of times and it is now working, although not quite sure what I was doing wrong. Thanks for the help. Like you say I probably missed out something simple along the way.
