This is off topic, but I’m not sure where to ask, and maybe someone here will know the answer.

I found this image on the web:

http://www.derekfountain.org/misc/evolve.jpg

using a Google Images search. It was actually on some guy’s blog, but it appears in several places on the ‘net.

I want to use this image on a commercial website, and would therefore want to get permission and pay a fee to the copyright holder if there is one. Only, there’s no credit or copyright on the image, so how do I trace the owner? The image might be in the public domain, but it’s also possible that it had a copyright mark on it which has at some point been cropped off.

I guess I could hire an artist to copy it for me, producing a work which I know is original, but if it’s a public domain image that would be a waste of time and money.

Any suggestions on how I should proceed?

Hi Derek

There is more information on the image’s origin here! (you need to page down!)

Thanks for that information. I didn’t realise it was such a famous image! Odd that it was drawn in the ’60s but the computer image depicted looks relatively modern. 🙂

Of course, I still don’t know if it’s in the public domain, but I guess I have to assume the copyright is still owned by someone – the book publisher probably…
