I have 19 clipart cd’s with wmf format files. When I try to open them in photoshop I get an error message. I have searched Google and there appears to be a plugin to allow opening of wmf files but all the links seem to be dead. I know I can convert them using other programs but it would be less hassle to open them direct. Does anyone have the plugin or can direct me to the right place?

WMF is a vector graphic format, I would be surprised if you could open one with Photoshop!!
Illustrator sound more likely!!!

Why not? You can open a PDF or an EPS in Photoshopo as well. Photoshop would render the image, so you would loose the vector scaleability. A plugin like that would ask at which resolution you want to render the image.

Don’t use Photoshop. It is the wrong tool for editing vector images. Use Illustrator.

I always wonder why so many people assume that if one owns Photoshop, one also owns Illustrator. Photoshop *is* for sale as a separate program, not only as a part of the Suite. My guess is that the majority of Photoshop owners does *not* own Illustrator as well.

If you don’t have Illustrator, this me help:

I’ve got the plugin on my personal web page. You can download from there. It was freely given to me and so please pass it on if someone needs it.

It’s not a question of assuming that all Photoshop owners also have Illustrator; it’s a question of using the right tool for the job.

If someone says "I’m building a house and I’m having trouble driving nails by hitting them with my screwdriver," I’ll say "use a hammer, not a screwdriver." I don’t assume that they already own a hammer, but I do assume they know where to get one if they don’t…

As long as the price of the tool and the payment for the job have a healthy relation, there’s nothing wrong with that. But you suggest using the most expensive tool to do the job, without even knowing if the job pays at all. There’s more than Illustrator to handle vector graphics, you know.

If someone says "I’m building a house and I’m having trouble driving nails by hitting them with my screwdriver," I’ll say "use a hammer, not a screwdriver." I don’t assume that they already own a hammer, but I do assume they know where to get one if they don’t…

Exactly. You’d say: "Use a hammer". Not "Use a Maquita (or any other brandname) hammer’. Illustrator is not just a hammer, it’s a very expensive pneumatic hammer if you want to make the comparison. Most people do not own such a pneumatic hammer, and do not need it if they just need to drive in a nail or two. That’s why I mentioned cheap alternatives to do the job.

If you had said "Use a vector program" I would not have reacted. But to you and many others ‘vector program’ seems to be a synonym for Illustrator.

I have a situation this week where it may come in handy!! I am going to TRY and do my job in ILLY as vectored, but after I get frustrated and give up I will most likely go back to PS. (and the clips I am using are WMF formats)
