No where do I read if or how one can correct for barrel distion in photoshop. Is there a method. Filter–Distortion–Pinch or Shpereize do not correct properly. So does anyone know another method ?

You can try playing with Transform Distort or Transform Perspective, but the best way is using Panoramic Tools, a free panoramic stitching program that has a steep learning curve. You can read more about it on Max Lyons web site:

Larry, I use Pano Tools with Max’s excellent PT Assembler to create panoramas, but have never been able to figure out how to use it to correct barrel distortion. The times that I’ve tried it ended in frustration (too many numbers for my brain to compute <g>).

Ted, I’ve never had much luck correcting barrel distortion in PS, so I opted for the LensDoc filter:

A little pricey, but it works well.

Hi Nick,

I forgot about LensDoc. I have it sitting here from a review I did a few years ago. You’re correct in that it’s much easier but cost more.

Larry,

I often shoot interiors using wide zooms, which can result in some pretty obnoxious barrel distortion. LensDoc has paid for itself many times over.

Thanks, John. Downloaded the trial, and at first glance it looks good.

I use Helmut Dersch´s original FREE PanoTools (not PTAssembler) when I need to correct a single image barrel distortion. It´s pretty straightforward and gives you good results.

Here´s a page I did many moons ago:

I dont know why Nick find it too complicated. Probably because he is an old man <g>.

It’s a shame that digital cameras mostly have zoom lenses. At short focal lengths, most zooms cause barrel distortion; at long focal lengths, they often do pincushion distortion. There’s usually sweet spot somewhere in the middle of the zoom range, where everything’s rectilinear.

If you have to use a zoom lens, and lines have to be straight, it’s a good idea to test, and find the focal lengths that do not cause as much distortion.

If it all has to be straight, not even keystoning, a tripod and bubble level would help, too.

Hello

I have just bought Undistort, only 15 Euros or 15 USD.
It is pretty good, also has correction for chromatic aberation. Gui is good, but preview is a little small, but has a zoom as well as a grid. Demo at <http://flofilters.free.fr/>
