It also works fine in PS 7. You need to use the numbers on the numpad.

Launch the Character Map program. (Typically found in programs -> accessories or programs -> accessories -> system tools) Select a basic font (like Ariel), and then see all the available characters. On many of them, when you click once on the character the keyboard shortcut will be shown in the info bar at the bottom of the window, on the bottom right. For those that don’t have a keyboard shortcut, you can use the character map to locate the character, then copy to the clipboard, then change to Photoshop and paste into your text line.

Thanks to a tutorial by Martin evening I now know on the Mac it’s command-option-c or command-shift-c. But on my winpc that didn’t work. See the Character Map utility (in xp under accessories/system tools), that shows you all the codes.

See bottom right corner of the window. There should be a piece of text saying something like: "Keystroke: Alt+(some number)" If that is not the case, then your character cannot be entered using the Alt+(num pad) combination.

Also, the RIGHT Alt key on some keyboard layouts is actually the AltGr (alternative group) key which enables you to enter certain accent characters. Those are combining characters that are followed by letters to make
up accented letters.

For example (make sure you’re viewing this post as UTF-8 text):

AltGr + 9 =
