Is there any way of changing areas of a jpg pic from white to black? This is a pic of a machine where the front face plate is white/gray (on a black & white pic) and it needs to be a black face plate. The text on the face plate is already white but the plate itself should be black not gray. I guess in other words I’m asking if there is a way to select certain areas of a picture (jpg) and adjust them to be darker. thanks for all the help.

There are always at least three ways to do anything in photoshop. How you accomplish what you are asking depends on: Your familiarity with the tools, the image composition, and to a lesser extent, intent of the image.

The easiest thing to do usually is to use the magic wand tool; set options in the options bar and select the pixels of interest. Then you can reverse your default background and foreground colors to make black the background and press delete.

Having said that, you might get more help if you posted an example of the picture somewhere and let us know the link.

Peace,
Tony
