Hi Jim,

Your picture is an example of a mixed lighting situation, with incandescent lighting from above, and ambient room light – I’m guessing filtered daylight – for the rest of the image. Over and above that, the image could use some snapping up of the contrast, and sharpening.

Very likely this image could be improved by adding a curves adjustment layer to knock out the yellow, but for a perfect job a mask is probably going to be needed to restrict this to the parts of the image that need it.

If you’d like, I can put this in the queue for the "Misfortunate Images" tutorial I am working on at

Here’s what I did with the image: since the sheep is white I used the desaturate tool to get rid of the brown color on the sheep. Then I used Lunaray’s Fade-Equalize trick. I ran the equalize filter and then used fade equalize using an opacity of 70%. I would post the example but I’m not sure if you are allowed to post images here. Hope this helps anyway 🙂

The easiest way to correct the image is correct it globally. It’s obvious from looking at it that it’s carrying a colour cast over the whole image. Correcting for that colour cast, and doing it right, will make the sheep white. If I’ve learnt anything from my expedience it’s that far too many people immediately reach for a selection tool when reaching for curves or levels would be far more accurate. if you use the selection tool to make the sheep white, the whole image will look wrong because the rest of it will still exhibit the colour cast.

A quick fix that need refining:

I first use a curve to remove the overall color cast; in CMYK mode I chose the front leg above the knee as a white point then added a sharp kick to the yellow channel. I then used the sponge tool set to desaturate 65% to try to even out the lighting. I used a fairly large brush because I couldn’t afford to spend more than a 2 or 3 minutes on this, but somebody with more time could probably get decent result with this method; PS 6 was used.
