I have a problem opening old files from floppies.

(Thanks in advance for any help.)

Wonder if anyone can give me some advice on what is causing this problem and how to go about fixing it…

I am trying to open some JPG files stored on floppies 4-9 years ago. I am using the same program to open them that was used to view them originally (Paint Shop Pro Version 3.1.1 in Windows 98SE).

The problem is exclusively with JPG files. All the non-graphic files open fine and GIF files open fine. Some JPG files open fine. Generally the ones that don’t open are on the same floppy.

I can browse them all and get thumbnails, but when I try to open them, I get the following fatal error…

Sounds to me like the files are damaged. Some programs are more tolerant than others to format problems in JPEG files. Try opening them with other programs that can handle images. If you can successfully open them with another program, save them to your hard drive with that program and you sholud be in business again.

BTW, you have just illustrated the need to have multiple backups of images. All storage media are subject to deterioration of the files stored on them. Image files are particualrly sensitive because of their size and because of the compression algorithms, which are very sensitive to errors in the data.

Also try reading the files on a different computer. Floppy readers vary in their ability to read slightly-off-spec files.

Try copying the floppies. Sometimes they can be copied and then read.

I once had a beloved game CD that stopped working. But I was able to copy it with Nero. I have done the same thing (with DOS COPY or DOS XCOPY) with floppies.

By the way, I hung out for years in two graphics newsgroups where the philosophy was, "We’ll try to answer your question if we can, even if you are in the wrong newsgroup. If we can’t, we’ll try to point you to the right group." We got some amazing OT questions and had a bunch of fun.

We felt it was a gentler, kinder way.

Dr Mallard,

Run the ScanDisk utility and see if there are any bad sectors. If scandisk offers, do not attempt to fix any errors on the floppy, because it could be the drive.

Either way, try copying the files to your hard drive before reading them, and as Mister Max suggested, try reading the floppies using another drive.

Also, try using Irfanview (free from www.irfanview.com) and see if it can read the images.
