I need to distort a barber’s pole banding into a circle to fit the outside circumference of a canister lid without distortion. I’ve Googled this to death and all the keywords and phrases I try fail to supply the needed technique.

Appropriate suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hmmm… "I need to distort … without distortion." Given such limited details and ambiguity it’s hardly surprising you’ve not been flooded with answers.

But maybe the 3D transformation filter will do what you need? Be warned, it’s pig to use… :o)

You could make it in a 3-D modelling program.

You are right, thank you. I should have said I need to bend or shape into a curve a straight banding without distorting the design of the banding. Yes, the inner part will become pinched and compressed some however in my own trials, the rounded results did not look like a circular version of its former self. Better?

Illustrator to the rescue! But do you really have to do it in Photoshop? We could make it a group challenge.

I am not familiar enough with some of the tools in PS to know if this can be done. Could one create a custom brush which paints the pole in a stroke. Then one could apply a stroke to a mask using that particular brushstroke?

I can do this in other software, so maybe PS?

Brian.

I need to distort a barber’s pole banding into a circle

This isn’t a circle, but is it basically the effect?

Rough redo: http://elearning.winona.edu/staff_o/jjs/test.gif 🙂 Like I said, rough. Just hacked it out. It’s my day off.

Sorry for the delay in responding, a holiday or something like that . .. . The circle effect is indeed what I want however it is a technique for rendering any banding rather than a specific barber pole that is needed for the client. In fact, she will be giving me a number of different bandings, bells, peppermints, et c that will need to be bent into circular borders. I mentioned the barber pole because it was the only one I had when I first submitted the inquiry. Sorry if that was a curve ball.

To answer the other inquiry, yes Illustrator is fine; I have it onboard as well.

Thanks for all your help.

It was done with polar distortion. If that doesn’t work, then screw the client.

I wrote an Illustrator plugin to do exactly this distortion some years ago. http://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw#radialdistort

Select the art, apply Radial Distort; your objects (paths) will be distorted as if the rectangle enclosing them were bent into a circle. This was used to distort artwork for conical tubs (like yoghurt, cream cheese, etc) but would also fit your need. (Because it only transforms paths, gradients would need to be converted to blends first, and type to paths.)

Thanks for all your help.
