I have a black & white photo of a goat (Emacs logo:
http://www.gnu.org/graphics/gnu-head-sm.jpg).
How can I turn the white color of the head of the goat into 50% transparent, keeping the black lines that draw the head with an opacity of 100%?
Thanks,

Charles.

Layer blend modes

one background layer (can be empty, if you like)
one layer on to which you paint white in he goat head shape lower opacity to 50% Normal Blend mode
one layer with the goat layer in 100% opacity, Multiply or Darken Blend Mode

Keep as PSD or export in a format that supports partial transparency like PNG

That’s not a photograph, but one way that’s pretty easy:

Ctrl-click on the Gray channel to get a selection. Ctrl-I to inverse. Make a new layer. Make sure black is your foreground color (D) and Alt-Delete to fill the selection with black. Make a new layer underneath that layer Select all, fill with white. Set Opacity to 50%. Trash original layer.

What you do after that it depends on what your intended use is. What is your intended use? I’m having trouble imagining what a 50% white background could be used for.

By the way, if you want ONLY the head and not the white area it’s on, outline it with the pen. turn the path into a selection and fill only that selection with white to bring down to 50%.

Thanks, it worked out fine. I have another problem. I am retouching icons for an OS. I use PNG format to store them. I want them to have transparent pixels outside but it looks ugly, although I applied a feather effect to smoothen the border, but there are these ugly white pixels outside the logos when the background is a dark color. Does any one have a tip to turn this outline smooth and invisible whatever bgnd color I set ?
