How do you make the edges of a gif transparent. The idea is that a rectangular gif would blend into the surroundings. Is this possible?

If you mean anti-aliased edges, no. Gifs do not support translucence. You can select a matte color close to the color of your background. If you are talking major blending into the background, I have a mini-tutorial for a workaround. Not for newbies:
