Is there a simple way to apply a sepia tone to a b&w image? If so, how?

Thanks all!

Hey Ray,

I’m not sure how familiar you are with Adobe’s "Actions" feature, but it can be very helpful. Window–>Actions–>Default Actions–>Sepia Toning (you can also hit alt+F9 to get the Actions palette). Make sure Sepia Toning is the only ‘checked’ item and hit the "Play" button at the bottom of the palette.

Supchaka’s method can certainly be used also, and gives you more control. It’s very good to know the manual steps and functions behind the processes we often take for granted in using such powerful software. The Actions list just lets you think a little less and usually saves on both ‘clicks’ and time. You could always use Supchaka’s method to create a sepia tone that you like…but record it using the actions palette so you can have your own, personalized version to "Play" rather than the one Adobe provides.

Good Luck,
TouchNova

Convert the image to grayscale, then convert it to duotone, select you secondary color to black and there you go

There’s this thing called a search engine…. perhaps you’ve heard of them?

You know, if we relied on search engines for everything, why bother having a users’ group?

Thanks all!

if the image is RGB use the sepia action.

if it is grey scale then convert to RGB (which will still be in grey) then run the sepia action because you are making a coloured image to print.

Simple!

You know, if the answer’s not readily available there’s nothing wrong with asking. But 99% of the time it’s pure laziness that drives people to not even do the barest minimum of research on their own.

why does some know it all always tell newbies not to ask questions here? Is this not what the group is for? Or am I confused?

You’re confused. Nobody tells anyone not to ask questions – but you won’t get a very good answer if you’ve obviously not bothered to read the manual or use your F1 key.

You mean not to ask moronic questions they could answer in 35 seconds on their own and thus learning to learn.

You’re confused. But little else is expected of top posting idiots.

Oh, and hey, GREAT job digging up a 7 month old thread.

Geesh…Do you always call people idiots in conversations?

…..oh..sorry, I guess you do…one just has to peruse this group to see all your negative remarks. Hate to be you.

This is what makes some excellent NG’s worthless.

Stopped by to get some info…I use PS rarely and get flamed out everytime I ask a "moronic" question.

No, just the ones who are idiots.

As far as I can see they are not know it alls – all they actually know is how to type TRY GOOGLE and get app 3760 hits. A real know it all would be able to point you directly to a page\site\author that would succinctly explain the alternatives, issues and process

say for example
http://www.kodak.com/US/en/digital/dlc/techniques/archive/se pia.jhtml and I don’t suggest that this is the best as I really do not know it all !!!

Seaside,

Thank you for taking time to research and post this link. For those of us who consider ourselves *still learning*, it’s a valuable how to.

Just as an aside, tho somewhat related. Having used many different apps of the years – Corel, Adobe Suite, MSOffice, Dreamweaver, etc., one of the most frustrating things I find is that even as many techniques are the same, you have to learn a new vocabulary for each app. As a speaker of several languages myself, I know how difficult and time consuming it is to break the barrier of a new language by learning all the different ways you can say something. Subtle idioms, figures of speech, slang, that sort of thing.

For example, I recently wanted to know how to take a square object (actually it’s a tooth), and round off the corners. Logically, you would think you could search the PS index by asking "how to I round off a corner". Nope, it’s modify…smooth. How did I learn this? I had to ask what such a process was called in PS. Fortunately, not only did I receive several answers, but was offered links to even better information.

I think that most of us who are seekers really aren’t looking for a "here’s how ya do it" (tho it is nice when someone does – I certainly have written my share of step by step), as much as we are asking for a road map. There are, after all, many paths to the top of the mountain.

Thank you again, Seaside. I certainly appreciated your efforts.

Remain well.
