I’m using Matrox G400 Max on a dual monitors setup. Is this vid card still very respectable or time has moved on? If so, what would you recommend for upgrade? TIA!

There is very little need to get a fancy video card for any 2D application. The strength of video cards is 3D animation. Quickly generating 3D structure so that you get a lot of detail and/or do it with as many frames per second is the goal of 3rd party video cards.
None of that is relevant to 2D apps. Photoshop wouldn’t make use of any of it.
The only reason to get a video card for any 2D app is just what you are doing — dual monitors. That feature doesn’t seem to come on regular video setups. Therefore, if yours is working fine, keep using it.

You have an excellent card for Photoshop. If you ever consider others for some reason, you’re better off to stay with Matrox, or at least avoid ATI cards if you’re running an LCD monitor, since they have known stability problems.
