I would like to create an image of (daytime) mountains RISING out of clouds/fog, similar to these:

http://photos7.flickr.com/6988261_ad127cd846_o.jpg

http://www.likwit.com/ecu2/857a7246.jpg

http://www.positioniseverything.net/images/chess-pie1.jpg (analogous)

The source image would be a regular photo of a mountain range with some forestation and a little snow – not barren like the top of the Himalayas. Maybe similar to:

http://www.pirateplanet.com/Colorado_4/small/Next_Peak_Over. JPG

The bottom of the final image would be totally white/grey – kind of like the where the previous chess pieces image is totally blue.

(1) Any advice on how I can achieve a convincing cloud/fog effect with software?

(2) Is there any kind of effect I can apply to the final image, to give me a night-time version of the scene?

Thanks in advance for any replies,

Miner2049er.

If you already have a picture of mountains, add a new layer and paint clouds in with the paintbrush tool. Apply blur, wind blur, reduce opacity, whatever. If that isn’t convincing enough, scrap that and add a new layer with an image of clouds in a dark sky and set the mode to Lighten (Photoshop – I don’t know Paint Shop).

If you want to create the mountains as well, try a landscape generator prog like Terragen, Kashmir or Vue D’esprit (which may be obtainable as shareware).

AFAIK there is no ready technique for converting daytime scenes to night-time scenes in Paint Shop/Photoshop or anything else. Terragen or Vue D’esprit allow you to alter the light/atmosphere settings however.

IN PSP 8 and above you could paint the cloud layer with the Paint a sky or paint a backdrop preset. Plus there is Mura’s cloud plugin in fog preset and maybe the new Eye candy Nature Smoke plugin. Depends on what you have now as to which way to go

Lots of tutorials online. Try searching Google with "photoshop tutorials".

You could use the Elemental Plugin that came with Paint Shop Pro 7XE.

Select the area you want to have the cloud cover and then simple apply either cloud sky or fog from the option in Elemental.

If you do not have version 7XE the new version of this plugin (V2) is available from

http://www.plugincreativity.com/products.htm

Hope this helps

Not so clever.
That is the way to get photographs of mountains from inside a cloud. Or was it just photographs of a cloud from inside a cloud? Must go and have a look through my contact sheets of the Lake District.

You got some good starting points from John Rampling, so I won’t go there. You will, as he says, need to experiment and be prepared to scrap it, an try another technique.

Now, many years ago, back when I was a cinematoghrapher, we’d do "day for night" with something like an 80A filter and about 2/f underexposure. With PS, I’d look at similar, but try some warmer highlighting with Lighting Effects – go for a rim of "moonlight" on the mountain and then try and get just a touch in the clouds. You can do so much better than we could with just a deep blue and underexposure. You might also look into a program, Mystic Lighting. Don’t have the URL handy, but Publishing Prefection sells it. Don’t recall what I paid, but it was less than US$ 150. I’ll grab an old mountain shot and play with Mystic Lighting, to see if my guess is right.

Sounds like a neat composite. Hope we get to see your final.
