How to blend images into mosaic?

I have seen countless websites where towards the top there is a nice mosaic style image that captures various elements of the topic at hand. I wish to create such an image that conveys all aspects of writing. I have various images (books, paper, typewriters, etc) and am wondering where I start. I am not sure how to choose a background on which to place these images. And I can’t imagine how to blend them into a cohesive whole.

Any ideas?
