OK – this must be simple. I want to draw a red circle line on a photo to highlight a problem in PS CS. any hints? I realize Adobe strives for user-hostile interfaces, however, this is ridiculous.

Thanks,

Click on the Marquee tool, hold the shift key, drag out
the circle, go to Edit -> stroke and enjoy.

If I would have read that portion perhaps. Otherwise it is much like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Thanks again to those that helped, and to Voivod? for identifying himself as an appropriate for the bozo bin.

The words "Use Shift, Alt and Ctrl for additional options" appears in the status bar for EVERY tool. Perhaps you
should get new glasses….

ral,
Voivod’s first reply to you was kind, short, and to the point. Her second was also short and to the point. Both aimed at helping you out. Voivod has been helpful here for ages. The only reason I even read your thread is to check out how saturated the water in this NG is with sharks today. Voivod’s reply was like a blessing from the pope or from your nearest rabbi compared to the normal reception that such a question elicits here. FYI, people make fun of questions like how do you make a line, how do you make a circle, etc. here. It is pretty well spelled out in the manual. It’s almost like stopping at a filling station and asking the people there, "which way is left?" It’s expected that you at least try to find the answer on your own before asking.
May your circle be blessed.

Ral,
Don’t let these know it alls bring you down. Obviously you’ve just laid out a lot of cash in this new venture and they don’t appreciate the effort you made so far, learning how to open the program and then mastering the "New" Command. As a word of advise though, you shouldn’t burn your bridges because you may need advise on how to "Save" your red circle too. By the way, did you think putting the A in D*MN would offend us more than seeing you snap at the people offering you help?

I have to disagree with your comment about reading the "tool tips" and "help files"
I’ve done the help files and there’s no mention about "draw" "circle." Never seen a "tool tip!"

I’m with you pal!
Still trying to find out how to increase the line width on the circles I can now (finally) create.
Almost afraid to ask.
People – loose description – use these programs for years then had the aucacity to criticize those who ask questions when they can’t find the answers within the support framework.

I feel I just have to tell you this because of your behaviour. In Photoshop 7.01 if I do as you suggest:
marquee w_shift > Edit the "stroke" option is still greyed out! You have to be on the center of the three optons (shape layers, PATHS and fill pixels) then right click and select stroke path in the popup window.
Point of this comment?
Well……. I think you get it.

It is in the online "help" file.

Circles are drawn with the "ellipse" tool, and the online "help" tells you how to change the line width.

It is your choice to not use the "help" file or read the manual or use Google or browse the Internet. It is also your choice not to explore the tools palette, or the options on the tools palette. It is your choice not to go to a bookstore and browse the many fine books on Photoshop – like Adobe’s "Classroom in a Book", or the "Quikstart" series. It is fascinating that you are having so much trouble with one of the most basic tools in the box after 24 hours.

You have overlooked so many resources available to you! Maybe you just do not know how what resources are out there.

Maybe you want training or something.

What can we do to help you?

Another word for circle is "ellipse". Try that word.

You have to have something set wrong or you’re using the wrong tool.

start from scratch
ctrl N new pix.
select elliptical marquee tool
at the top you should see a pull down with 3 settings normal, fixed size and something else.
lets go with normal since they all work the same.
on the image background hold shift to constrain the image to a circle. otherwise you get pretty much a free form oval.
drag it out to the size you want.
you should see dancing ants forming the outline of the circle. let go of shift
right click or use the edit pull down from the top menu
select stroke or fill. stroke just creates an outline of a circle, filled creates a filled circle.

now wait for the menu popup to decide the next few steps on how big a stroke and color of stroke or fill.

hit enter and you should have a circle.

Would you like a screen shot of the line that reads:
"Use Shift, Alt and Control for additional options" And another that shows:
"Constrain selection to circle"
after you press the shift key like it told you to?

OR how about entering "circle" into the help file and reading "Selecting and moving objects"
Where it says:
"Constrains marquee to square or circle"

I have generally found that people with an artistic ability can become rather territorial and defensive when it
comes to discussing the tools to their respective trades.
