I have 2HDDs and I wonder what’s the best scratch disk configuration:

a) Windows swap file on HDD 1 and Photoshop scratch disk on HDD 2 or:
b) Both Windows and Photoshop swap files set to HDD 2

I also welcome any additional ideas on how I can utilize these 2 hard drives to achieve maximum performance.
Both are 7200 RPM Seagate Barracudas on separate IDE channels.

Add another hard disk and have Windows Swap on disk 2 and PS Swap on disk 3 😉

Failing that, just make sure that the swap files are on different hard disks.

Without going into all of the possible RAID options, and going with what you have, the best should be:

OS, PS and Win Swap on physical disk 1

PS Scratch Disk (hopefully only) on physical disk 2

PS CS will use ALL of the HDD real estate that you can use. I think the limit is around 3200 TB (forget what the designation above TB is, right now). Obviously more that any one individual is likely to have available. In the " old days" of v6-7 it was 4x4GB for Scratch Disk, hence one could take a 16GB HDD, and partition it x4, allocating each as a PS Scratch Disk. It is good to keep your Scratch Disks free of other data, especially data that is likely to be re-written, as fragmentation can occur. I always keep the largest possible HDD free for PS CS.

Does this mean you need yet another disk for Illustrator???

Only if you use them both at the same time…:)
