I am new to photoshop and have been told by a senior staff member to make a high resolution gif in photoshop. I have an original banner (72dpi) that i have edited. Now I have to save it as a high resolution gif. How do I go about doing this?

Your ‘senior staff member needs to realize that the GIF file format is *not* a "high resolution" format, and GIF files will *always* be 256 colors and 72 dpi … by definition.

If you need a "high resolution" file, you will need to save it in TIF, PSD, EPS, TARGA, or PNG format. JPG/JPEG would also be an option, but since you have alluded to producing something like a Logo, it would *not* be a good option.

Is it possible the staff person said "high-res TIFF"? Gif, Tiff … sound sorta the same, especially after an afternoon margarita …

If so, it would be far far better to start with a high rez image and save a version in a lower rez. Going from low to high is a guarantee of a crappy result.

If the only file you have is the original 72 dpi file, the results of simply enlarging the dimensions and bumping up the resolution will be unacceptable to anyone with any standards.
Perhaps you can enlarge the original and use it as a low-res template to create a hi-res file?

He probably did not say "high-res GIF," as there isn’t such a thing. He may have said "high-res TIFF," or he may just be confused.

In any event, here is what you do:

Step 1; Close the low-res GIF.

Step 2: Click on the icon for the low-res GIF.

Step 3: Drag it to the Trash. It is no good. It is not possible to create a good quality high-res image from a low-res image; it can’t be done.

Step 4: Run Photoshop.

Step 5: Use the File->New command, and fill in the size and resolution information in the New dialog box.

Step 6: Re-create the image from scratch.
