Hello,

I work primarily with print design, but sometimes have to provide graphics for online use. The problem is, that the webmaster that I provide the graphics for likes the file size as small as possible, and is willing to sacrifice quality and sharpness for a smaller file size, and thus a faster download. Since I work mostly in print, however, where things can usually be sharp and clear, I hate giving up so much quality on web work.

I’ve seen other websites that have large graphics that are sharp and clear, and don’t seem to take forever to download, but every time I try to optimize a graphic in Photoshop, either the file size is too large, or it gets all blurry or grainy.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips on optimizing graphics (primarily photos) in Photoshop (or ImageReady), or if there is a better program available for optimization (either from Adobe or elsewhere).

Any help would be appreciated!

Jonathan

Jonathan,

Try File>Save for Web. You’ll get the best results from that.

Jonathan,

Half the secret is in NOT re-sampling images if at all possible, and judicious use of USM……

Thanks for the comments, everybody. I’ve never tried using USM . . . I guess I’ll have to give it a try.

Thanks again!

Jonathan,

In order to achieve a good compression / quality setting on your web graphics, a good understanding of how compression works is necessary. This is beyond the scope of forums like this and takes a bit of studying.. I can´t recommend any single source here, but online searches should do it.
