Note: I’m splitting this into 3 postings in case it won’t fit in one.

The PROBLEM
I just spent some time revisiting my 2GB RAM problem with a set of tests to determine what REALLY works and what doesn’t. I had noticed some problem with 2GB RAM installed which did not appear with 1GB installed and was reluctant to use the 2GB believing I had a hardware (RAM? Mobo? Chipset? OS?) problem.

The TEST
I used 2 images from a project I just finished for a fairly large trade show kiosk. The RGB image is approx 350MB flattened and I timed a series of tests while purging the history/undo between most of them. I also timed how long it would take to open the 900mb layered version of this image (10 image layers/ 3 adjustment Layers / 5 mask layers). I tried with RAM allocations of 85%, 75%, and 45% and noted the timings for each. I did this with 1GB RAM installed as well as 2GB RAM (4x 512mb PC3200 DDR).

The CONCLUSION
I’m now fairly convinced that the problems I noticed are minor and the tests performed showed that the gains of 2GB RAM outweigh any problems with tasks that I don’t usually perform ie: Saving 65MB Progressive JPEGS that save just fine as Baseline ‘standard’. I’m pretty sure it’s a Photoshop issue but it probably won’t affact my work

Did you do the same test with 1G?

Also, did the final save time change substantially after applying the changes to the file?

It still doesn’t make sense that the times increase, unless you have a lot of backround processes going on.

Lawrence, yes, it is his third post..
The longer time to open large images with 85% of 1Gig than 75% is maybe because the OS doesn’t have enough ram…

Thanks for the info, Russell!

There’s a 1GB posting and a 2GB posting (3 postings in all). The opening time with 2GB and 75% RAM allocated to PS was about 1 second shorter than with 1GB but all in all the opening times seemed pretty close.

1GB corresponded to one 1 second in speed gain? Doesn’t sound like a big gain for the cost?

Grass Hopper,

The difference become a LOT more apparent when actually WORKING with the image. Compare the numbers for rotating, flipping, unsharp masking, gaussian blur, etc.. Some are 3-4x faster with the extra RAM.

I think the opening times reflect more the speed of the HD and less that of Photoshop. That’s why they don’t vary as much.

Yes, I see the 1G test. Too tired when I read it yesterday. Blowing snow and frozen pipes also don’t do much for keeping one’s attention on the subject.

Thanks Russell.

It’ll be going down to -30C (-22F) by this weekend here in Montreal… Yikes! Guess I turn those fans in the computer case off and crank up the processor <g>

Hey! Speak for yourself, graf! I’m from Chicago. Cicero, actually. Call a guy fron Cicero (remember Capone?) a wuss and………….. 😉

When I lived there, I was a volunteer firefighter. It wasn’t unheard of to answer a call on a freeway that involved going the wrong way on a snowy freeway ramp at -20F (-29C). Riding the back running board of the firengine.

People in Portland are spoiled.

Ever notice that revolutions and all that hot stuff rarely occurs in c-c-cold places on this planet? Folks are just too busy trying to stay warm 😉

(ok..Russia’s an exception..)

FWIW: Capone spent some time in the French colony of St. Pierre and Miquelon (just off the shores of Newfoundland) which was a bustling booze boom town during prohibition days. Someone once told me that the biggest (only?) hotel in town sports a painted portrait of Gabe himself in the main foyer. I’ll check that out for myself if I ever get there for a visit.

D’ya think this thread’s going get tossed into the lounge for succumbing to off-topic-itus ?
