This is the first post of the new year, I would like to give a Happy new Year to all the forum members.

Now the problem…

I need to fix a color banding problem, basically a sort of blue to light blue gradient that show banding when viewed on screen. I’ve found some resource about this issue and all suggest to fix it by adding noise.

All the documentation found was unfortunately generic, I’m looking for more details and/or technique.

Thanks for any help.

I think you will need to give some more details.
When do you get this problem?
Is it just on the screen?
Is it just on your screen?
Can you post an example so we can see what you mean.
Which version of PS and Windows, BTW?

Colin,

I think he means a particular image, not a structural problem with PS or the montor. If I’m right maybe it involves the sky on a photo. In that case I would select the sky (excluding clouds and birds etc.) and blur it.

And a Happy New Year!

Maryo,

With gradients banding will occur when:

1) There is little difference between starting and ending colours and
2) The gradient is spread over a large area.

Increasing the range and reducing the distance will help.

Adding noise over the gradient at about 2px will normally eliminate most banding problems

Thanks all for the replies,

I experience the banding problem only with the image I’m currently working on. It’s like Len wrote, the banding is due to little color difference between starting and ending colours + spread ove a large surface.

I will try the 2px noise Len way and/or the Rob blur tip.

Bye!
