I’m trying to do a project where I am simulating bodypainting and have been exporing the displace filter. I’ve found a few tutorials but trying to get a pattern, to curve round body contours with any degree of accuracy seems quite difficult. Does anyone know of any tutorials that explore this?

The alternative is to use poser to create a similar position to the source photo, apply the pattern and then overlay that image onto the photo but replicating a physical position using poser is not easy. In fact it’s downright lumpy!

In particular the difficulties I’m having is that the pattern doesn’t ‘compress’ near the edges of the body and selecting the layer/blend mode to use.

Any help much appreciated

Displacement mapping works best if the grayscale image you’re trying to wrap to is a bit blurry (Gaussian Blur) .

Yes, I’d found three of these, but thanks anyway

true, in fact things go awry in interesting ways if you don’t. Some tutorials specify using a greyscale image for the displacement map whereas others recommend using a 2 channel psd as p’shop will then use 1 channel for left/right and the 2nd channel for up/down (or vice versa)

One difficulty is that, using an original photograph of a human there will be areas of shadow & highlight that look correct in a photograph but these same dark areas, when used for displacement, can work against the effect you’re trying to achieve. I’ve had some decent results with a few attempts and with others, despite following a similar process just don’t work at all, there are many, many variables with the use of this filter. Presently I am experimenting with completely repainting the two channels separately to try to get better contour shaping, as you can imagine it’s not straight forward.

For the moment I can create a ‘model’ to work to by using Poser (4) to replicate the photo, wrap a texture onto it and simulate similar lighting to the original photograph. I can then paste this over (or sometimes under) the original photo and use the liquify tool to adjust. Trouble is with the liquify tool that you can only see one layer at a time, if I could use this tool whilst keeping an underlying layer visible I would be cooking with gas!

Anyway, thanks for replying, if I get anything half way towards being good I’ll post a link so as to get further advive

thanks again
