Alexandre

You are limited only by the available RAM and the size of your allocated scratch disk (both can be specified in Preferences).

Depending on the type of file, the opened size can be 3x to many times over the actual size of the file on disk. For example, taking into account the pixel dimensions, the number of layers, masks, effects, shapes, etc, a 5MB file can easily expand to 500MB when opened in Photoshop.

That is completely incorrect. You are limited both in number of pixels (30,000) and disk space (2GB). The scratch disks are also limited to 2GB, but that is per file, and you can have several.

Photoshop CS ups this limit greatly, but must use a new variant of Tiff to do so.

Oh, no it’s not! Please read the question.

Oh, yes it is.

Please read the question.

I did. I suggest you take your own advice.

Of course, a Certified Photoshop Expert might not know that it’s quite possible to write a PSD over 2GB (especially since there is software that will write PSDs that are not Photoshop, and there are conditions that unfortunatly allows PS to write a file that large), but then be unable to read it because of the limitation.

But that would a shame.

JD? HP?
That’s for CREATING the file. The poster wanted to know if there is a size limit to OPENING a PSD that already exists.
